Oral blog entry 7, diploma lecture summary 2, week 10

Helping Others
Date : 8, May, 07 Lecture : Dave Griffiths

If somebody collapses, you do not have to dial 111 or use medicine immediately. There are some procedures to help the collapsed properly. First of all, you have to stop. After that, you have to think whether you are safe or not. When you try to help you should use some barriers such as gloves, plasticbags or T-shirt to protect yourself. The next step is to communicate with the person. Move their chin up and their head back. Get close to the person and look at and listen to their nose and feel to see if they are breathing. If they are not breathing you have to resuscitate the person.

To resuscitate the collapsed who are not breathing use the kiss of life. Cover the mouth, squeeze Nose to close and breathe into their mouth. If they are still not breathing you have to pressure their chest 30 times with rhythm. Anybody can collapse at anytime and anywhere so we should be prepared to help others.

These two pictures show different types of learning. The first picture is related to student-centred learning but the second picture indicates teacher-centred learning. In comparison, students have more space to move and there are more facilities, which is a wide white board, water supply and a notice board, to be used in the first picture. However, students in the second picture can concentrate much better on the teacher and the instructions of the teacher. The first picture presents more advantages to improve the students cooperative spirits.

To teach in the second picture is more convenient for teachers. However, in terms of effectiveness of learning such as discussion skills, respect for others opinion, and participation, the first picture is much better. Also the first picture is more effective for students to get the answers to the questions, asked by teacher, by themselves. Furthermore, while students in the second picture are asked to answer directly, students in the first picture are able to get the knowledge more broadly in the course of discussion and presentation in front of another students. Therefore, I think that the first picture proves a more effective way to learn.

TBS 2. blog entry 7, Diploma Trip, week 9

(I took it from Cindy!)

With stunning excitement and great expectation I woke up in the morning in the day of the Diploma Trip. However, I was very worried because the weather was not good. It was drizzling when I arrived at the Café; La Vinci in Titirangi with Emma, a beautiful young classmate. Although it was raining all my classmates looked so happy. After we ate morning tea we went to Huia Point in order to enjoy the scenes. We took photos there and talked together, so we came to know each other better.

After we had a wonderful time, we headed for Cornwallis beach all together. Before we started, our teacher, Jan Patterson, checked the number of classmates and she found she had missed several students. Arriving at the beach we realized that the missing students had gone fishing. We unloaded all the bags in one place and all except Emma and me went for a walk. I had a talk with her and I got to know more about her life in N.Z.

Unfortunately, after a light meal I had to leave early because I had another appointment at 2 o’clock. I was impressed by the wonderful beach which was calm and peaceful and I’ll not forget it for long time.

TBS 2, blog entry 8, About my country in the international press, week 10

The Seoul committed to linking N.K. railways

According to this article, Korea is the only divided country in this world and it is trying to reconnect the railway between Seoul in the South and Gaeseong in the North. The Military Demarcation Line made in 1953 by two strong countries after the Korean War, they are the U.S.A and the Soviet Union, has been crossed by the trial run of the two railways a few days ago.

A huge investment by the South Korean government will contribute to restore the broken railways regardless of how much money is required. The North Korean government is worrying that the alleviation of military tensions may eventually lead to reunification being achieved by South Korea.

The reconnected railways can contribute to the delivery of many goods such as raw materials, mineral resources, soaps, shoes and other production across the border. A survey showed that over half of the adults in South Korea agree that the test-runs of the trains will promote peace on the Korean Peninsula and assist the development of the economy of North Korea. Most people surveyed in South Korea, however, said the North would not cooperate with the South to uplift inter-Korean relations.

TBS 2, blog entry 3, Book Review, week 5

Greg Ogden, the author, writes a wonderful book. I was very impressed by this book. It leads me to think differently about church systems and the pastors’ role. It gave me great insights in the part of serving a church.
Greg Ogden is the Executive Pastor of Discipleship at Christ Church of Oak Brook, Illinois. From 1998-2002, Greg served as Director of the Doctor of Ministry Program at Fuller Theological Seminary and Associate Professor of Lay Equipping and Discipleship.
Unfinished Business, the title of the book, indicates an uncompleted ministry of a church which means a distribution of ministry to the people of God. He deals with many aspects of church such as church systems, cell groups, ministry and pastors. "Only an organism can complete the unfinished business of the Reformation and return the ministry to the people of God"(Ogden, 2003, p.37). In addition, he suggests that all churches should shift from a pastor-centred to people-centred. Also he states that a pastor is like a player-coach and encourages the people of God to be stewards of the gifts God has given them. According to the Bible, a pastor is called not to be respected but to serve(John13:14-15).
I changed my mind, after reading this book, to give the people of God opportunities as much as I can because they are co-workers with me everlastingly.

Move to stem truancy growth

Although truancy numbers in Christchurch have been growing since 2002 officers could not tackle truancy reactively due to the lack of resources. So schools are trying to reduce truancy by increasing the number of officer, using electronic system and the District Truancy Services. Furthermore, the Government has declared that $2 million of extra investment will be given over the next four years to combat truancy. To diminsh truancy is becoming a crucial social issue, as truancy is related to crime. A new trial is to set up new electronic enrolment system and to charge parents to solve truancy. But it will not be enough to totally overcome truancy because there are a number of reasons for students to be truant.

I could find 69 examples of active verb forms in the article. On the contrary, just 9 instances of passive verb forms were used by the writer. Among them there are 4 reduced relative clauses, 4 present simple passives which is "are contracted, be given, be extended, are required", a simple past passive which is "were stretched", and a present perfect passive form which is "has not yet been set".

There are many differences between a supermarket and a local market. If someone wants to buy fresh vegetables with lower prices he(or she) needs to go to a local market. Furthermore, people in the local market can experiecnce the Sun and negociate with sellers. On the contrary, a supermarket is running a price tag system which doesn't need any negotiation. All vegetables are well-ordered so that people can save their shopping time. Meanwhile, the local market is noisy and there is narrow path and more complicated due to so many customers. A supermarket usually opens everyday until late and people are able to compare the price or goods' conditions. Therefore, I prefer a supermarket to purchase vegetables. When I walk around in a supermarket which is very bright, modern, clean and convenient, I am very comfortable.

TBS 2, Blog Entry 2, Effects of globalization on my life, Week 4

Tuesday, May 1, 2007

The whole world has been changing quickly and is in the process of the unity at every aspect such as culture, custom, goods, city type and common law. Some special things such as media, newspapers, internet, or wealth are promoting globalization.
The first thing that effects of globalization on my life is to encourage moving to New Zealand. It is not usual that I go abroad to study or live in another country due to my introspective character. In addition, I am learning English in order to use it more properly everyday because English is a common language in the world. And somebody says, this world could be called 'a blue ocean' which indicates peace in oppose to ‘red ocean’ which indicates war. People in the period of 'a red ocean' usually had to compete to get better things such as position, wealth or power.
However, globalization has accelerated people to cooperate with each other so that I have to collaborate with anybody. Otherwise nobody including me can survive in the earth.
Furthermore, one of the most greatest effects is that I don’t hesitate to go anywhere to live or work due to help of the media or internet which is the main tools of globalization. Through those I am able to contact my family, friends or colleagues promptly if I want to let them know my situation urgently. The last effect for me is to understand other nationalities’ cultures and customs because I can get the knowledge of other people before I meet them. It makes me more gentle and polite without any misunderstanding.

TBS 2, Blog Entry 5, My break, week 7

I have visited a macademia farm which is in the region of Hellensville with some people including my family during my holiday. It was so agitated visiting. First of all, we did not know where it was exactly so we wandered for a bit long time to find out the location of it. It made us so excited. In addition, we had a look trees with macademia nuts and a lake fulled with fallen leaves. Furthermore, amazing taste of those enchanted us to be happy and we saw wonderful goods made from that fruit. Moreover, what we have been impressed is practicing to break hard shells of those with a cute tool and sampling kernels of macademia nuts without cost. I strongly recommend you go there and experience to fantastic features of the farm.

Oral blog entry 2 - Album Review, week 5

They look wonderful and have amazing voices. The Amici band perfom contemporary classical music so some people are fascinated by them and Amici rouse their audience to enthusiasm. The band have participated in several events such as opening the Champions' League final at Old Trafford, supporting Shirley Bassey on her 50th Anniversary UK stadium tour, and singing for Prince Harry at The Prince's Polo in Berkshire.
The members are Jo, Tsakane, Geoff, Nick and David. They published two records. The titles being shown on this first CD are :
La Fiamma Sacra (The Sacred Flame)
Nella Fantasia
So Far Away
Prayer In The Night
Aranjuez Ma Pensee
Nostalgia (La Mia Nostalgia)
Core 'ngrato (Ungrateful Heart)
Land & Freedom (Terra e Liberta)
Mon Coeur S'Ouvre A Ta Vois
Recondita Armonia
Adagio
Ocean Heart (Oceano Cuore)
I was so amazed when I listened recently to the music for the first time. And I listen every time I take my car and am able to remember the rhythm and the words of songs. People call their music style 'popera' which is combined pop and opera. In other words, this type is a combination of classic and pop music so that people enjoy listening repeatdly. If you want to know where they have visited and have a look at gallery of their perfomance you have to visit the website. You can listen to all their songs Online or you can purchase the CD at record stores now.

US boosts security in Germany over terror threat

This is a story about security in Germany. The US embassy in Germany is setting up the security due to the increased risk of terrisom. In addition, the US embassy encourages Americans in Germany to reinforce their personal security. According to several newspapers, US facilities and people in Germany might be attacked by Iraqi militants. Two Germans were kidnapped and there was a failed attempt to blow up two German trains.

In newspapers, most verb forms reporting what happened are past simple form. There is a past continuous: were scouting, and three past perfect: had increased, had conducted, had received which explain that some affairs were completed in the past. I could find a few present tense and one present coutinuous tense: are increasing. Furthermore, present perfect: have urged, has not suffered, has threathened, one present perfect continuous tense(have been working) were used. Moreover, I saw one passive past tense(was echoed).

Lecturer : Sarah Hardman(Unitec lecturer & ASTE branch chairperson)

Have you belonged to a Union overseas or in NZ? Why would I need a Union? Everybody needs to have a right to be protected through the Union to keep life balance. Lots of workers organise themselves into a voluntary association or union with respect to wages, hours, working conditions or any other matters.

According to recent investigation, around 330,000 people joined a Union; among them 51.5% are women. The reason why women rate is a little bit higher than men is the number of women working as nurses or teachers is quite high.

A Union leader can be elected by members voting. The members can go on strike if the agreement has expired, when negociating a new CA or they give a reasonable reason. You need to join a Union and pursue more satisfaction with working conditions such as fair pay, entitlement, working hours or environment.

TBS 2, Blog Entry 1, About me! Week3

Hi everyone.
I am James. I am doing a Diploma English course at Unitec this year, 2007. When I arrived here with my family in 2002, I was so frightened, I couldn't find anybody in the street. Actually, this is so different from my country, South Korea. Now I understand this country is very calm and peaceful due to less population.
In addition, the evironmental merit of NZ such as clean air, water, wide green fields or lots of trees are enough to attract my family to stay longer. We have had difficulty in comunicating with people who use English as their mother tongue. So all my family are currently studying English to accomplish our goals; my children are studying at Royal Oak primary school and my wife and I are studying English hard. We are living in the area of One Tree Hill.
We have travelled to many areas and cities since we came to New Zealand. Particularly, we went to the South Island last holiday for 2 weeks. It was so exciting and lots of fun. To understand NZ culture, geography or customs immigrants may have to look around cities and famous places.
I am studying English to live a much better life in this country. There are many ways to live a good life in NZ, for instance, making friends who are using a different language everyday, visiting places with historical traces, and so on. Therefore, I want to understand various life styles to love all nationalities. I hope everybody experiences a better life in NZ. Bless you!
